My boyfriend and I at the time had been together for a few months.  Everything was going well in the beginning.  He rolled out all the stops for me wining and dining me.  I thought this guy may be “the one”.  One day we decided that we were going to get some food.  After discussing a few options, we decided on mexican so we could get margaritas, too.  We go to my favorite mexican place where they know me by name.  We order our food and drinks.  The date is going really well so far.  Conversation is flowing and we are having a good time.  Then my boyfriend tells me that he doesn’t like my new haircut.  I had recently chopped my long locks for a shorter bob.  At first, I was a little offended.  I mean, how dare he?  But, then I figured it was no big deal because I liked my hair longer, too.  I told him not to worry that it would grow.  He just had to be patient.

This apparently did not go over well with him.  He looks at my new hairdo then at my outfit (I am wearing overalls and flip-flops).  Then says to me “You look like a boy…a farmer’s son”.  I look at him in shock.  Really?  He didn’t just say that to me.  He then goes on to say that he doesn’t like any of the clothes that I wear.  Now, I am upset.  I ask what do you expect me to wear?  He replies black pants, heels, a cute top…you know dressier than what you do.  Keep in mind at the point that this happened to me, I was a broke college student.  I was wearing jeans and flip-flops most days.  That is all he ever saw me wear.  Why is he now trying to change my appearance?  I ask him this and his response to me is if you are broke, I’ll give you money for a new wardrobe.  Now some girls may jump at the chance for a new wardrobe.  But, my wardrobe was just fine for where I was at in my life.  I try to explain this to him and gets upset with me.  He tells me that I don’t care about my appearance and I would rather look like a little boy the rest of my life.  That is it!  I have had enough.  I am not a club girl and don’t want to wear club attire, so he looks better with “eye candy” on his arm.  Screw that!  I tell him that if he doesn’t like me the way I am, then he doesn’t like me.  He did not have the right to try to change me.  He knew what he was getting into before we ever started dating.  This guy had known me for five years prior to this event.  So, it’s not like this was new to him.  I was in college!

My anger only rises as I am talking to him.  How dare he!  I decide that it is time for me to leave the restaurant.  I stand up and throw my margarita on him thinking to myself that he is a complete asshole.  I start screaming at him in Spanish.  My actions cause the rest of the restaurant to stop and stare at me and my rage.  My boyfriend is now covered in strawberry margarita and has an upset woman screaming at him in another language.  The scene causes the cooks in the kitchen to come out to see what the commotion is.  Since I know everyone that works there, some of the employees come over to find out what is going on.  I explain.  Now, the employees in the restaurant are yelling at him.  I grab my stuff and walk out of the restaurant.  I’d rather walk home than deal with this.  I leave my boyfriend in the restaurant being yelled at by the employees there.  He catches up to me in his car (I am walking on the side of the road) and orders me to get in the car.  I tell him where he shove it and keep walking.  He tries again to get me in the car.  I look at him and scream at the top of my lungs “You are not the boss of me!  I will go where I want when I want to and do whatever the fuck I want to!  If you don’t like it, go fuck yourself!”  He gets the hint after this display of rage by me and finally drives off.

  1. Wow! Who died and made him your fashion consultant? This was a date, not a makeover! This fellow was a shallow @$$hat and you dodged a bullet

  2. And if he didn’t like how she looked, why wait after they’ve been dating a few months to bring it up?
